Here are five reasons why math worksheets don’t work if you want students to understand math, enjoy math, and think mathematically. 1. Math worksheets are not engaging. Numerous research studies have found that when students are actively engaged with the content, they have a much better chance of understanding and remembering what they have learned. Unfortunately, math worksheets tend to bore most students, especially those who need the most help in math. Engagement entails much more than rote repetition of a procedure. Math worksheets tend to present very similar problem types over and over, leading to mundane practice of disassociated skills. For students who understand the material and successfully complete an assignment, another worksheet becomes meaningless. On the other hand, for the students who don’t understand the material, an alternative method of instruction is what’s needed. Another worksheet simply adds to the student’s frustration, or worse, contributes to a belief that ”I’ll never understand math.” A cute image or a ”fill-in-the-blanks” riddle does nothing to increase engagement or learning (and let’s face it, those riddles are not funny!). Instead, teachers need to increase engagement by providing students with exercises in which they discover patterns and relationships, solve problems, or think creatively about math relationships.

Your kids learning their shapes are very important to the development of their learning skills. It’s been proven that learning shapes enhances their reading capabilities in the future, and comprehensive skills as well. Then, you can cut out the shapes when they are all nice and colored, and paste them onto the wall of your toddler’s room in order to refer to them every now and then and review the lesson. With a little parental guidance, they can really learn them. Save Money. As a home schooling mom, you don’t need anyone to tell you how expensive it can get. One way to save money is to use free homeschool resources when you can. Free fraction worksheets that you can print out can help. If money is tight, many times you can find enough free worksheets to use for your math curriculum and you won’t even have to buy a math textbook. By buying or checking out a ”scope and sequence” book, you can see what your child should be doing in each grade level. Once you know what your child should be working on in a particular grade, search for worksheets that fill those needs. Look for worksheets that have complete instructions that are easy for you and your child to understand.

If you have read my article ”Helping Your Child With Basic Arithmetic? Stay Away From Worksheets” then you know that I am not a fan of traditional worksheets. After writing that article, I found another credible teacher who has written many ezine articles expounding on the benefits of worksheets. I decided some clarification of position is in order. The primary problem with most math worksheets is that the problems are already written out and the child need only write the answers. For learning and practicing the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, it is much more beneficial for the child to write out the entire fact and say the entire fact out loud. A child will learn a multiplication fact much faster if they are writing out 6 x 8 = 48 at the same time they are saying ”six times eight is forty-eight” than if they just see 6 x 8 = ___ and only have to supply the 48.

Teachers even use printable worksheets. The kids are allowed to trace the numbers, letters and even join dots. This is the perfect way to control the movement of the wrist and fingers of the kids who are practicing these worksheets. With continuous practicing it gets easier for the children to learn and write clearly. Worksheets are used in schools to practice cursive writing. Worksheets can be a fun activity for the students. A teacher can easily allot a work to a group of kids on through these worksheets. All this can help a student to learn and write in a fun way and even teach him/her how to perform in a team and forming social bond with other kids. There are many kinds of worksheets available but the best one is still the personally drafted one. This way one can easily check the level of difficulty that is offered to the kids according to their age and even check the progress level. Worksheets can be reused but it’s always better to upgrade them from time to time. Accessing these free worksheets would only be helping us in every term to succeed in our education field. Yes, the internet has its bad effects but at the same time it has a whole world of good effects too. If correctly utilized the online web world can help you to propel yourself to daunting heights. Yes, indeed practice makes it perfect but in terms of education if you do not have the correct set of practice materials everything will just be a waste. 4. Math worksheets are not accessible. Some students are unable to access tools that many of us take for granted when they try to complete worksheets. Other students, including those for whom English is not their primary language or who struggle with reading, have difficulty reading the directions, words, and math terminology on the worksheets. Still other students require different visual representations or methods of engagement in order acquire an understanding the content. Most math worksheets do not provide information in multiple formats so they are inaccessible to students with a wide variety of learning styles and abilities. Well-designed technology can provide these students with access to excellent content. For example, these fractions tools and supplemental curriculum allow students with physical disabilities to access fractions content using a variety of assistive technology devices. Instructions, prompts and feedback can be read aloud, while visual models, cues combined with sounds support a wide range of learning styles and abilities.

Keeping your kids busy in the winter can be a magic act. There’s only so many times that you can take them to the mall playground before they get a serious attack of the flu because of the coughing kids. So how do you keep them busy while staying in the safety of your own home? Well, if you go into the Online Games section of the Fisher Price websites, they have tons of printable worksheets for you to get your kids and entertain them. The key is to get tons of crayons, and sit with your kids while they color the shapes and talk to them about what it is that they are dong. Talk to them about the colors that they are using, how many sides each shape has, how do you spell the name of the shape, how you spell the name of the color that they are using, etc. The object of the activity is for you to really interact with your child for them to learn their shapes.
